BRAVE ACCOUNTABILITY: Showing up for God by Loretta Muñoz Edwards
Blessings to all the Brave Hearted Steppers out there,
Accountability is a strong word. It gives us both a role and responsibility. At times, accountability comes with being judged by others, and your own mind will make you doubt yourself. The real question is, do you care more about what people say or what God says?
We all have accountability. That can be leadership or a role at church or as a student and employee. We are all given a role in society. Your specific role allows someone else to do their job as well. But you have to be brave enough to be judged by others, seen on the good and bad days. You can’t drop everything when things get difficult.
One of the strongest demonstrations of accountability is simply showing up.
Imagine getting a phone call for an appointment and thinking “yeah I’ll call back later “you end up not showing up. The doctor was going to give you a treatment that could heal you but you did not show up.
That’s exactly what happens with your spiritual life. What if I told You that you are just one prayer away from seeing God move, one worship song away from feeling his presence. You are one church service away from receiving your miracle. And you decide to not show up. You just neglected what the king himself had prepared for you.
There is a level of bravery required for accountability. You have to be able to show up with people mocking you, discouraging you, and even individuals trying to stop you. Remember that you are on a mission directly from the King himself.
Let’s compare:
God: Full of mercy, and will forgive you but also very just. However, if you refuse to show up to His calling, you will be held accountable for your disobedience on the Day of Judgment, which determines whether you spend eternity in heaven or in hell.
People: You mess up once, and people already judge you. Emotions are temporary and you do what they want so they’ll be happy, but if you disobey them, they get mad. This might result in temporary consequences like discipline or being fired, but nothing eternal.
I would fear the One who determines my eternity.
Biblical context
Jeremiah was a prophet that spoke the word of the lord. He never had good things to say because the people were living in disobedience to God. Jeremiah spoke the words of the Lord. He was beaten and suffered tremendously. He showed up in the places where people despised him to prove that the words of God are true. He showed up because he had a mission directly from God and he was being held accountable to speak. So he spoke anywhere and to anyone without holding back what the Lord was saying even if he was beaten.
“When the priest Pashhur son of Immer, the official in charge of the temple of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things, he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put in the stocks at the Upper Gate of Benjamin at the Lord’s temple. The next day, when Pashhur released him from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord’s name for you is not Pashhur, but Terror on Every Side. For this is what the Lord says: ‘I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends; with your own eyes you will see them fall by the sword of their enemies. I will give all Judah into the hands of the king of Babylon, who will carry them away to Babylon or put them to the sword.”
