Bible Study: God Guides My Steps, Learning to Trust God's Direction by Rev. Maria Guzman

Hello Brave Hearted Steppers,

Have you ever stood at a crossroads and wondered, “God, which way should I go?”

Maybe you’ve had to make an important decision.

Maybe you weren’t sure what your next season would look like.

Maybe you’ve prayed for direction but wished God would give you a clear map instead of asking you to take one step at a time.

The truth is, we all face moments when we need God’s guidance.

The good news is this: God cares about the direction of our lives.

He is not distant or disconnected from our journey. He invites us to trust Him, seek Him, listen for His voice, and follow His leading.

So, what does the Bible teach us about allowing God to guide our steps?

1. God Guides Us When We Trust Him

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

Proverbs 3:5–6 (NLT)

Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us not to lean entirely on our own understanding.

Our understanding is limited.

We only see what is happening right now. God sees the beginning, the middle, and the end.

Sometimes our way seems right because we can only see what is directly in front of us.

But God sees the bigger picture.

Trusting God means saying:

“Lord, I may not understand what You are doing, but I trust You enough to follow where You lead.”

Trust does not mean we have every answer.

It means we know the One who does.

When we trust God, we don’t have to figure out the entire path before we take the next step.

Let’s Think About It

What area of your life are you trying to figure out on your own?

Are you asking God to guide you while still holding tightly to your own plans?

What would it look like to surrender that situation and say, “Lord, I trust You even when I don’t understand”?

2. God Guides Us Through His Word

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalm 119:105 (NLT)

God’s Word gives us direction for our daily lives.

When we don’t know what to do, we can return to what we do know.

The Bible teaches us how to love, forgive, serve, persevere, wait, speak, listen, and walk in obedience.

God’s Word may not answer every specific question we have, but it gives us the wisdom and principles we need to navigate the decisions in front of us.

Before asking, “God, what should I do?” we can also ask: “God, what does Your Word teach me?”

The more we know God’s Word, the more we learn to recognize what aligns with His character and His ways.

God’s Word helps us recognize the difference between what we want and what honors Him.

It becomes a light for our feet and a lamp for the path ahead.

Let’s Think About It

What does God’s Word say about the situation or decision you are currently facing?

Have you taken time to search Scripture before making your decision?

Is there something God has already shown you in His Word that you need to put into practice?

Sometimes we are waiting for God to give us new direction when He is reminding us to follow the truth He has already given us.

3. God Guides Us Through Prayer

“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” James 1:5 (NLT)

Prayer is not just about asking God to bless the path we have already chosen.

Prayer is also about surrendering our plans and asking God to lead us.

Sometimes we pray: “God, bless what I want to do.”

But surrender says: “God, show me what You want me to do.”

There is a difference.

When we pray with an open heart, we become more willing to listen, wait, adjust, and obey.

Prayer gives us a place to bring our questions, fears, hopes, and decisions before God while trusting Him to give us wisdom.

We may not always receive an immediate answer.

Sometimes God’s guidance requires us to wait.

Sometimes we need to keep praying while we seek wisdom and discernment.

But we can trust that God welcomes our questions and invites us to ask Him for wisdom.

Let’s Think About It

When you pray about your decisions, are you asking God to lead you—or are you mainly asking Him to bless the path you have already chosen?

Is there something you need to surrender to God today?

What would it look like to pray with an open heart and say, “Lord, I am willing to follow wherever You lead me”?

4. God Guides Us One Step at a Time

“The priests will carry the Ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth. As soon as their feet touch the water, the flow of water will be cut off upstream, and the river will stand up like a wall.” Joshua 3:13 (NLT)

One of the hardest things about following God is that He doesn’t always give us the entire plan.

Think about the Israelites crossing the Jordan River.

They had to step forward in faith before they saw the way open before them.

Sometimes we want God to show us the destination before we take the first step.

But faith often works differently.

God gives us enough grace for today’s step.

You may not know what next month will bring.

You may not know how everything will work out.

You may not know what the next season will look like.

But you can ask:

“What is God asking me to do today?”

Then take that step.

You don’t have to walk tomorrow’s path today.

God is not asking you to carry tomorrow’s responsibilities with today’s strength.

He is inviting you to trust Him with the step that is in front of you.

Let’s Think About It

What is the next step God may be asking you to take?

Are you waiting for God to show you the entire path before you move?

What would change if you focused less on knowing everything that comes next and more on being faithful with what God has placed in front of you today?

Remember: You don’t have to walk tomorrow’s path today.

5. God’s Guidance Requires Our Willingness to Follow

“Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, ‘This is the way you should go,’ whether to the right or to the left.” Isaiah 30:21 (NLT)

God can guide us, but we still have a choice.

We can listen—or ignore.

We can obey—or resist.

We can move forward—or remain stuck because we are afraid of what might happen.

Following God’s direction requires courage.

Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is take the next step when we don’t have all the answers.

God’s guidance is not simply about knowing the way.

It is about being willing to follow Him along the way.

There may be times when God asks us to move.

There may be times when He asks us to wait.

There may be times when He asks us to let go of something familiar so we can step into something new.

Whatever the next step looks like, we need a willing heart.

We can ask God for the courage to follow His leading, even when the path feels unfamiliar.

Let’s Think About It

Is there a step God has been asking you to take that you have been hesitant to take?

Are you afraid of what might happen if you obey?

What is holding you back?

Sometimes the next step requires us to trust God more than we trust our fears.

Ask yourself: “If I truly believe God is guiding me, am I willing to follow?”

A Brave Hearted Reminder

If you are standing at a crossroads today, remember:

You don’t need to have the whole path figured out.

You need to know the One who is leading you.

God is not asking you to walk tomorrow’s path today.

He is inviting you to trust Him with today’s step.

When you don’t know what to do, seek Him.

When you feel uncertain, search His Word.

When you need wisdom, pray.

When you don’t know what is ahead, take the next step in faith.

And when God leads you, be willing to follow.

You may not know where every step will take you.

But you can trust the One who is guiding your steps.

Let’s Reflect

Take some time to sit with these questions:

1. What area of my life am I currently asking God to guide?
2. Am I trying to figure everything out on my own, or am I truly trusting God?
3. What does God’s Word say about the decision or situation I am facing?
4. Am I asking God to guide me, or am I asking Him to bless a path I have already chosen?
5. Is there a step God has been asking me to take that I have been hesitant to take?

Journal Prompt

“Lord, I don’t know everything that is ahead, but I trust You with…”

Complete the sentence.

Then write a prayer to God about the path you are currently walking.

Tell Him what you are uncertain about.

Tell Him what you are afraid of.

Tell Him what you need wisdom for.

And surrender your next step to Him.

Brave Hearted Challenge

This week, before making an important decision or taking a significant step, pause and ask: “God, what is my next step?”

Then:

Listen.

Pray.

Search God’s Word.

Seek wise counsel when needed.

And when you believe God is leading you, take the next step in faith.

You don’t have to know everything that comes next.

You just need to be willing to follow God with the step He has placed in front of you.

Brave Heartedly, one step at a time.

Closing Prayer

Father God, thank You for being my Guide. When I don’t know which way to go, help me trust You. When I want to understand everything, remind me that You see what I cannot see. Help me seek Your Word when I need direction. Teach me to pray with an open heart and surrender my plans to You. Give me wisdom to recognize Your direction, courage to follow Your leading, and faith to take the next step. When You ask me to move, help me move. When You ask me to wait, help me wait. And when I don’t know what lies ahead, help me trust the One who does. Help me walk confidently—not because I know what lies ahead, but because I know You are with me. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
