Bible Study: God Protects My Steps, Trusting God’s Protection Along the Journey by Rev. Maria Guzman
“The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever." Psalm 121:7–8 (NLT)
Hello Brave Hearted Steppers,
Have you ever found yourself walking through a season where you wished you could know that everything was going to be okay?
Maybe you were making a decision and wondered what was waiting for you on the other side.
Maybe you were walking through something difficult and found yourself asking, “God, are You protecting me in this?”
The truth is, we all want to feel safe.
We want to know that the road ahead will be smooth and that nothing will hurt us.
But following God does not mean that we will never encounter difficult roads.
The Bible shows us something deeper.
God’s protection does not always mean that He keeps us from every difficult situation. Sometimes His protection is found in His presence. Sometimes it is found in His wisdom, His strength, His peace, or even His redirection.
God may not always protect us from the journey, but He promises to be with us through it.
So, what does the Bible teach us about trusting God’s protection as we walk through life?
1. God Watches Over Our Steps
“The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.” Psalm 121:7–8 (NLT)
Psalm 121 reminds us that God watches over our lives.
He sees where we are today.
He sees the places we are walking into.
He sees the places we are walking through.
He sees the places we are walking away from.
Nothing about our journey is hidden from Him.
There may be moments when we feel uncertain about what is happening around us, but God is never unaware.
He knows what we do not know.
And He is already present in the places we have not yet reached.
God’s watchful care does not mean that we will never experience pain, disappointment, or difficulty.
But it does mean that we never walk through those things outside of His care.
When you don’t know what is ahead, you can remember that the One who watches over your life is already there.
Let’s Think About It
Where are you right now in your journey?
Are you walking into something new?
Are you walking through something difficult?
Or are you walking away from something that God is asking you to leave behind?
Take a moment to remember that God sees every part of your journey.
What area of your life do you need to remember that God is watching over?
2. God’s Protection Does Not Mean We Will Never Have Problems
“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)
“If God is protecting me, why am I going through this?”
That is an honest question.
We may believe that if God is with us, then difficult things should never happen.
But Scripture teaches us that God’s protection is not always about keeping us from every difficulty.
Sometimes God protects us in the difficulty.
Notice what God says in Isaiah 41:10.
He promises to be with us.
He promises to strengthen us.
He promises to help us.
He promises to hold us up.
Sometimes it looks like peace when we feel afraid.
Sometimes it looks like wisdom when we don’t know what to do.
Sometimes it looks like courage when we want to give up.
God’s protection is often found in His presence.
The difficult road may still be difficult, but we do not have to walk it alone.
Let’s Think About It
Can you remember a time when you went through something difficult and God helped you make it through?
Looking back, where can you see His presence?
Did He give you strength?
Peace?
Wisdom?
Courage?
Sometimes we don’t recognize God’s protection until we look back and realize how He carried us through something we thought we couldn’t survive.
3. Sometimes God Protects Us Through Redirection
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:5–6 (NLT)
Sometimes we know exactly where we want to go.
We make our plans.
We picture how things should happen.
And then suddenly, something changes.
A door closes.
A plan falls apart.
An opportunity disappears.
And we wonder:
“God, why didn’t You let this work out?”
Sometimes, what feels like disappointment in the moment may later become something we recognize as God’s redirection.
A closed door is not always rejection.
Sometimes it is redirection.
But we also have to remember that we may not always understand God’s protection right away.
We may not immediately know why a door closed or why our plans changed.
That is where trust comes in.
Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us not to depend entirely on our own understanding.
We may only see what is happening right now.
God sees what we cannot see.
He knows what we do not know.
When we trust Him, we can surrender our plans and allow Him to direct our paths—even when His direction looks different from what we expected.
Let’s Think About It
Have you ever experienced a closed door or unexpected change that later made more sense?
Is there something in your life right now that you are struggling to understand?
Could you trust God with the possibility that He may be leading you in a different direction?
Sometimes we don’t need to understand the closed door.
Sometimes we simply need to trust the One who knows what is on the other side of it.
4. God Is With Us When We Walk Through Difficult Valleys
“Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.” Psalm 23:4 (NLT)
There are seasons when we find ourselves walking through valleys we never expected.
A difficult diagnosis.
A painful loss.
A broken relationship.
A season of uncertainty.
A situation we never would have chosen.
When we find ourselves in these places, it can be easy to wonder where God is.
But Psalm 23:4 reminds us of something powerful.
God is with us in the valley.
David does not say, “If I ever walk through a valley.”
He says, “Even when I walk through the darkest valley.”
There will be times when we walk through difficult places.
But notice the word through.
The valley is not necessarily where we are meant to stay.
We may have to walk through it, but we do not walk through it alone.
God’s protection does not always remove the valley.
Sometimes His protection is His presence while we are walking through it.
He comforts us.
He strengthens us.
And He reminds us that the valley does not have the final word.
Let’s Think About It
Are you walking through a valley right now?
What would change if you stopped asking, “Why am I here?” long enough to remember, “God is here with me”?
Can you trust that even though you may not know how long the valley will last, you don’t have to walk through it alone?
5. God’s Protection Gives Us Courage to Keep Moving Forward
“The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” Exodus 14:14 (NLT)
Sometimes fear makes us want to stop walking.
We don’t know what will happen next.
We don’t know if we will have the strength to handle whatever comes our way.
So we become afraid to take another step.
But when we trust God’s protection, we can move forward with courage.
Our confidence is in knowing Who walks with us.
We don’t have to have every answer.
We don’t have to control every outcome.
We can trust God with the road ahead.
There may be times when He asks us to move.
There may be times when He closes one door and opens another.
And there may be times when He simply asks us to take the next step in faith.
Whatever the next step looks like, we can move forward knowing that God is with us.
His protection gives us the courage to keep walking.
Let’s Think About It
What fear is keeping you from taking your next step?
Are you waiting until you feel completely safe or completely certain before you move forward?
What would it look like to trust God enough to take the next step—even if you don’t know everything that comes after it?
You don’t have to know the entire path to take the next step.
A Brave Hearted Reminder
If you are walking through an uncertain season today, remember:
God protects your steps.
That does not mean every step will be easy.
It does not mean every door will stay open.
It does not mean you will always understand what God is doing.
It means that wherever your journey takes you, God is with you.
He strengthens you.
He redirects you when necessary.
He walks with you through the valleys.
And He gives you courage to keep moving forward.
You may not know what is around the next corner.
But you know Who walks beside you.
And that is enough to help you take the next Brave Hearted step.
Let’s Reflect
Take some time to sit with these questions:
Where do I currently need God’s protection?
Am I expecting God’s protection to mean that I will never experience difficulties?
Is there an area where God may be redirecting my steps?
Am I walking through a difficult valley right now? How can I remember that God is with me?
What fear do I need to surrender to God?
What would it look like for me to trust God’s presence instead of my fears?
Journal Prompt
“Lord, I may not know what is ahead, but I trust You with…”
Complete the sentence.
Then write a prayer to God about the place you are currently walking through.
Be honest with Him about your fears.
Tell Him where you need His protection.
Tell Him where you need His strength.
And surrender the steps ahead to Him.
Brave Hearted Challenge
This week, when something makes you feel afraid, uncertain, or overwhelmed, pause.
Take a breath.
Remember that God is with you.
Then pray:
“God, I trust You with this step.”
You may not know what the next step will bring.
You may not understand why the road looks the way it does.
But you can trust God with the step that is in front of you.
Pause.
Pray.
Trust.
Then take the next step He has placed before you.
One step at a time.
Brave Heartedly.
Closing Prayer
Father God, thank You for watching over my steps. Help me trust Your protection even when I don’t understand the road ahead. When I face difficult moments, remind me that Your presence is with me. Give me wisdom to recognize Your direction, courage to keep moving, and faith to trust You when I cannot see what is ahead. When I walk through difficult valleys, remind me that I never walk alone. When a door closes, help me trust You with the redirection. When fear tells me to stop, remind me that You are beside me. Help me remember that Your protection does not always mean an easy road. Sometimes it means Your strength in my weakness, Your peace in my fear, Your wisdom in my uncertainty, and Your presence through every step. Teach me to trust You with the journey. I may not know what is around the next corner, but I know You are walking beside me. And because You are with me, I can take the next step. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
