Bible Study: God Strengthens My Steps, Learning to Walk in God's Strength by Rev. Maria Guzman
“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13 (NLT)
Hello Brave Hearted Steppers,
Have you ever reached a point where you simply felt like you had nothing left to give?
Maybe you’ve been carrying responsibilities that feel overwhelming.
Maybe you’ve been facing a difficult season that has left you emotionally, mentally, or physically exhausted.
Maybe you’ve whispered a quiet prayer that sounded something like, “Lord, I don’t know if I can keep going.”
The truth is, every one of us experiences seasons of weakness.
There are moments when our own strength isn’t enough.
The good news is that God never intended for us to walk through life relying only on ourselves.
Throughout Scripture, we see that God strengthens His people when they are weary, discouraged, afraid, and overwhelmed.
He doesn’t abandon us in our weakness.
He meets us there.
So, what does the Bible teach us about walking in God’s strength?
1. God’s Strength Is Greater Than Our Weakness
“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13 (NLT)
Philippians 4:13 is one of the most well-known verses in the Bible, but it is often misunderstood.
Paul wasn’t saying that we can accomplish anything we desire simply because we believe.
He was reminding believers that Christ gives us the strength to endure every circumstance God allows us to face.
Our confidence isn’t found in our own abilities.
It is found in Christ.
Our strength doesn’t come from pretending we’re never weak.
It comes from knowing where to turn when we are.
When we honestly pray, “Lord, I can’t do this on my own,” we are not admitting defeat.
We are acknowledging our dependence on Him.
And that is exactly where God wants us to be.
Let’s Think About It
- What would change if, instead of asking yourself, “Do I have enough strength?” you asked, “Am I relying on God’s strength?”
- Are there areas where you’ve been trying to carry the weight on your own instead of giving it to God?
2. God Gives Strength to the Weary
“He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.” Isaiah 40:29 (NLT)
God sees when we are tired.
He sees the battles no one else knows about.
He sees the responsibilities we carry, the prayers we continue to pray, and the moments when we quietly wonder if we can keep going.
Our weakness never surprises Him.
And it never disqualifies us.
God meets us in the middle of our weariness and gives us the strength to continue.
Sometimes His strength comes through a renewed sense of peace.
Sometimes it comes through His Word.
Sometimes it comes through prayer.
Sometimes it comes through the encouragement of another believer.
And sometimes God strengthens us by reminding us that rest is not weakness—it is wisdom.
When we pause and allow God to refresh us, we make room for Him to renew our hearts.
Let’s Think About It
- Where do you feel most weary today?
- Are you trying to push through something that God may be asking you to surrender to Him?
- Have you allowed yourself time to rest in His presence?
3. God’s Grace Is Enough for Every Step
“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NLT)
Paul pleaded with God to remove a struggle from his life.
Instead of removing it, God reminded Paul that His grace would be enough.
That teaches us something important.
God’s strength doesn’t always mean the difficulty disappears.
Sometimes God strengthens us while we are still walking through it.
He gives us grace to endure.
He gives us courage to continue.
He gives us strength for the next step.
And through every season, He reminds us that we never walk alone.
God’s grace is sufficient—not only for the biggest challenges in life, but also for the ordinary moments when we simply need enough strength for today.
Let’s Think About It
- Is there a situation you’ve been asking God to remove?
- Could He be inviting you to experience His grace in a deeper way instead?
- What would it look like to trust His strength while you continue walking through this season?
4. We Can Be Strong Because God Is With Us
“This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (NLT)
Joshua was entering a completely new season.
There were unknowns ahead.
There were challenges waiting for him.
God didn’t promise that the journey would be easy.
He promised His presence.
That is where our courage comes from, too.
We don’t have to be brave because we know exactly what will happen.
We can be brave because we know Who walks with us.
God strengthens our steps through His presence.
He never asks us to walk alone.
And He will never leave us to rely solely on our own strength.
Let’s Think About It
- What challenge are you facing that requires courage?
- How does knowing God is with you change the way you see that situation?
- What step could you take today, trusting His presence rather than your own strength?
A Brave Hearted Reminder
You don’t have to carry every burden by yourself.
God never asked you to walk in your own strength.
When you feel weak, He is strong.
When you are weary, He renews you.
When you are afraid, He walks beside you.
His grace is enough.
His strength is available.
And He will give you exactly what you need for today’s step.
You don’t have to have tomorrow’s strength today.
Trust Him for the step you are taking now.
Let’s Reflect
Take a few moments to prayerfully consider these questions:
- Where do I currently feel weak or weary?
- Am I relying more on my own strength or God’s strength?
- What does Philippians 4:13 mean in my current season?
- Is there something God is asking me to surrender?
- What is the next step God is strengthening me to take?
Journal Prompt
“God, I need Your strength today because…”
Write honestly.
Give God the places where you feel tired, overwhelmed, discouraged, or afraid.
Then complete this sentence:
“The next step I believe God is strengthening me to take is…”
Brave Hearted Challenge
This week, whenever you begin to feel overwhelmed, pause before trying to handle everything on your own.
Instead, pray:
“Lord, strengthen me for this step.”
Then:
- Spend time in God’s Word.
- Pray honestly about what you’re carrying.
- Rest when you need to.
- Trust God’s grace for today.
- Take your next step knowing He walks with you.
- You don’t have to carry tomorrow.
God will provide the strength you need one step at a time.
Closing Prayer
Father God,
Thank You for being my strength when I feel weak. Help me stop relying only on what I can do and teach me to depend on You. When I am weary, renew my heart. When I am discouraged, remind me of Your promises. When I am afraid, help me remember that You are always with me.
Give me the strength I need for today’s step and the faith to trust You with tomorrow. Teach me to walk confidently—not because I am strong, but because You are. May Your grace sustain me, Your presence encourage me, and Your power shine through my weakness.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
